Chicken Soup for the Soul: Mom Knows Best

Our moms are really our first teachers. The first things we learn when we are babies come from them. And we continue to learn from them as we grow up. Moms need to know they are appreciated, loved and respected, and that we were listening. The stories in this book will make moms everywhere feel that all their hard work paid off.

We're looking for your stories about mothers of all ages and types. We want to know the lessons you learned from your mom, stepmom, foster mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, or someone who was like-a-mom to you — what she taught you and how she made you who you are today.

Make our readers laugh as you share stories about funny lessons learned from your mom; make them tear up with the heartwarming lessons you learned and about those special times; and make moms feel that all that hard work really is all worth it — their kids really do appreciate them and listen to them.

We are not looking for general tributes — we know your mom is terrific. Please, no eulogies and no biographies. Here are some suggested topics:

  • The wisdom of moms
  • Values learned from mom
  • Support and encouragement from mom
  • Learning about sacrifices made by mom
  • How you were really listening all along
  • Mom as a role model
  • Special moments
  • Passing on wisdom and legacies
  • The importance of family traditions
  • The importance of laughter
  • Fulfilling dreams
  • Lessons learned by husbands and partners about moms
  • Becoming your mother
  • Grandmothers — unconditional love and support, wisdom
  • Wacky, funny, unconventional moms and grandmothers
  • Different kinds of families
  • Watching your mother navigate divorce or other hardships
  • Any story that you can imagine a mother reading on Mother's Day that would make her feel like all      that hard work was worth it!

**Title Change: This title was previously posted on our website as Stories about My Mom. If you submitted your story or poem to that title, there is no need to resubmit it. We have it in our database and it will be considered for this title.

All stories and poems need to be true — we do not publish fiction. Stories should be no longer than 1,200 words. If your story was already published in a past Chicken Soup for the Soul book, please do not submit it. We will not publish it again. If you submitted a story to one of our previous Mothers' book titles and we did not publish it, please do submit it to us again so we will be sure to consider it for this new title.

Please remember, we no longer publish "as told to" stories. Write your story or poem in the first person. Do not ghostwrite a story for someone else unless you list that person as the author. If a story was previously published, we will probably not use it unless it ran in a small circulation venue. Let us know where the story was previously published and the approximate exposure it received in the "Comments" section of the submission form.

If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you so choose. You will also receive a check for $200 and 10 free copies of your book, worth more than $100. You will retain the copyright for your story and you will retain the right to resell it or self-publish it.

SUBMISSIONS GO TO OUR WEBSITE.

THE DEADLINE DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS SEPTEMBER 30, 2018.

I'm not sure that I have every single one of their books, but I do have a bookshelf full of them! It would be very nice to have my name in one of their books.

Thanks for posting this.
