The Old Church (poetry)

Recommended Posts

I fear we shall see more and more of these in days to come . . .

Old Church

Standing alone, a stark alabaster shrine

Bells calling to worship now an echo

Filtered light seeping through stained glass

Melting, multicolored, on the communion table

Crucifix still clutching its nailed sacrifice,

Gazing down with saddened eyes

Upon the voiceless pulpit, darkened with use

A sentry, waiting, mocking the vacant silence

A dusty hymnal, yellowed pages, torn

Lying on the pew, whispering forgotten words

God, tear stained upon the altar, broken

Left for dead, for now, abandoned

Thank you Nikki!! It makes me sad to think that churches are closing daily in our country. As the older generation dies off, less and less people are attending.

Wonderful words, DrRita.

I love old churches, always have.

You capture the mixed emotions that going in an old country church bring out.

Thanks, Brian

Thank you so much!  Breaks my heart that so many churches have closed in the last few year.

Thank you John. I know, it's becoming more and more prevalent as the congregations age and new blood is rare.
